Repairing major water damage on an RV roof. In this case the EPDM rubber was still in decent shape; it was simply a caulk failure at a seam which caused a …

  1. good video, for a bit of help. think one of those magnet bolt bowls from el-cheapo tools. (lowest price). great way to keep the screws in one place for reuse or just lower chance for a flat tire.

  2. Thanks for this video. I recently found a soft spot on the roof of my travel trailer and seeing your repair reassured me that it's not the end of the world and can be fixed in the back yard.

  3. I used this exact same contact cement on my rubber roof and it caused it to bubble in several spots. It seems to me, that this means that it creates too much heat. It isn't wrinkles otherwise, I wouldn't be having these problems. Do not use this stuff on EPDM because it will damage it. I'm super pissed that I listened to someone on a youtube video about how to fix the roof on my camper.

  4. Can a TPO RV roof be pulled back like a rubber roof. My plywood on the front part of my fifth wheel is gone. Didn't know about the leak until it's was to late.

  5. maybe better some plywood wether paint ant then rubber menbrane or rolle of waterproof membrane. treated wood has acq depending on construction time. sow it will roten al kind of metals and has toxic chimicals….

  6. I need to do the same thing to my roof antenna leaked and osb is soft any suggestions on loosen up the awning enough to pull back the roof without removing the awning?

  7. Thank you for sharing your experience. The back of my camper had a water leak and the roof is soft in an area of a 1 sqr feet. This video inspires me and gives me hope!

  8. You should never use contact cement with EPDM roofing. The proper stuff is a water based adhesive. The contact cement will dry out the rubber, and put it down forever even if it's wrong.

  9. I've just recently bought a Fleetwood Wildnerness 24c camper. I'm new to the whole thing. It's got some pretty major rot and roof damage. It was cheap and we're to be homeless soon. I've done a lot of research on RV roofs and the leaking issue seems to be the biggest. Yet people continue to use rubber roof and sealants that don't seem to hold up for much more than a year. Isn't there some other materials that can be used that are more reliable and last longer? And if roof vents are so prone to be the major source of leaking, why even have them? I'm considering just taking mine out completely.

  10. I just discovered same wood damage at the front of my camper. It's all winter here in BC, Canada . I guess I should wait till it's warmer before I start the project for the tape and adhesive to bond?

  11. perfect timing, just replaced roof w/masonite hard wood ,was stumped on under or over w/rubber,looks like u went under,i'll give it a try.also adding insulation (foam board type ) to ceiling

  12. Great video! Do you think that I can do similar on a patch I have a section of wood about 10"x12" in front of my refrigerator vent and on the edge any chance of a patch? To repair before I coat the roof thanks

  13. HI, thank you for the how to. Our Puma is going to have the same issue right at that seam where the rubber roof meets the metal that comes up the front. Did you tuck the rubber roof up under the metal or just use the seal tape? Thanks again!

  14. Good video. You even mentioned the #2 bit to remove screws. I would have done one thing differently: I would have poured the contact cement on the OSB and just rolled it out.

  15. So the OSB had rotted and freed up the rubber roof…
Why do RV manufacturers use particle board, chip board, why not use marine grade plywood, or pressure treated wood, or hardwoods which withstand a bit of water once in a while?  RVs seem predesigned to collapse.  How much can they save up front by going cheap?  My RV even used particle board quarter round molding with a fake vinyl wood grain coating on the floor in the bathroom, which expands and blows up on contact with water.  Ridiculous choice.

  16. its' a good video however the rubber roof wasn't glued previously. why would you glue it down now?.. if it ever has to be peeled back again you're looking at replacing the whole thing.  also, I've worked with contact cement.  I don't think it's going to last being exposed to the elements like that.  I would have gone with sealing around the edges and getting the correct type of sealant from an RV dealer..  the other thing I would have done is replace the OSB with a material that won't be affected by water so much.  an exterior grade plywood maybe.  they use OSB to save money. that stuff expands like crazy when it gets wet.  it assumes you'll never have a leak. ha ha.

  17. Great video.Any tips on how to remove tar from the seams of an aluminum roof?I have a 1979 terry travel trailer and the previous owner sealed the vent seams and roof seams with tar.Any tips on how to take the stuff off?

  18. good vid . i think the number one thing most people don't know about rvs is that you need to re caulk the seams vents and ac about every 2-3 years its not hard just take your time and make sure to use the correct caulk . don't go to the local home improvement store and buy whatever . go to a RV shop and get the wright caulk sealing tape for your roof there is different kinds of rubber roof and not all calks and sealing tape will stick . every one should go up 2 times a year and check every inch of the roof for soft spots or bad caulk or sealing tap

  19. We will be doing lot of traveling this summer: Black Hills of South Dakota, then Yellowstone for about a month, then Glacier National Park, and on to Oregon, Washington, and Northern Cali.
Will be doing a lot of how-to vids, along with product and campground reviews, and some of the things we find interesting along the roads.
    Thanks for watching!

  20. You were able to make a how to video fun to watch!!
