  1. I couldn't tell you how many houses I've been on removing ice dams. I know you believe that you have this figured out but your're wrong on many points you brought up. You live where it snows that means there is two rows of ice barrier under the shingles at the bottom edge of the roof. This prevents melting ice/water from reaching the sheeting/roof deck at the bottom edge of the roof. So even if the ice crawls under the shingles it will not get inside unless it crawls up the roof beyond the two rolls of ice barrier. The ice builds up in the gutter until it gets to the top of the gutter and then crawls up the roof but it's what you don't see is how it's getting in the house. When it reaches the top of the gutter it also enters between the top of the facial board and the roof deck entering into the soffit then the soffit fills up with ice, then it enters over the sill plate at the top of the wall and enters the house. When it reaches the house it's warm turning the ice to water. To get by for the winter the ice has to come out of the gutters therefor it will begin to fill up with ice again. When spring comes along have a roofer make repairs. Here's the secrete, Have the roofer take the gutters off the house, put new ice barrier along the bottom edge of the roof but this time leave 3 inches of the ice barrier hanging past the bottom edge. This way you can fold it down over the facial board then put the gutter back on over top of the ice barrier that is over the facial board. This closes the gap between the facial board and the roof deck. Now the ice will build up in the gutters and only crawl up the roof instead of entering the soffit and facial and then the house. A roof with a pitch less than 4/12 gets covered completely with ice barrier. It's code. Just like it's code for two passes along the bottom edge of the roof line in snow ridden regions of the united states.

  2. Hi Eric – My neighbor had the same thing happen to him this year and you wont believe what he did but it worked. First he put about 25 lbs of calcium cloride on the ice so he could chop it and break it up like you did. Once he got rid of all the ice at the edge of the roof and it was clear. He then took 4 pair of pantyhose filled the leggs up with more ice off tied off the waist band and placed them on the roof about 18 inches up from the edge and no more ice dam's. When it snowed it melted.

  3. Right on brother the biggest contributor to ice dams is a poorly insulated attic! If you see big icicles on a house you know where the heat is going The rule of thumb is if you insulate you must ventilate which is often overlooked.. You need a properly ventilated attic depending on size.
